Little Greene is an independent, British paint manufacturer. Dating back to 1773, the Little Green Dye Works of Collyhurst Wood is one of Great Britain’s oldest industrial sites known for producing paint and dyes, located on the outskirts of Manchester. The site was granted rights to be used as a ‘house producing colours’ by the Earl of Derby in the 18th century.
It was here that Little Greene was born - a brand committed to the socially and environmentally responsible production of high-quality paints and wallpapers. They value their industrial and historical heritage through their creation of colours lost by time, faithful in tone to their respective periods.
Joshua Rowlands - the earliest identifiable proprietor of the Little Green dye works - led the process of manufacturing traditional paints for domestic and industrial use by utilising his experience of producing dyes in the cotton industry. The facility is situated where the rivers Irk and Irwell cross - a natural resource that made the site particularly famous for its fast flowing clean water. Their early products were based on natural resins and pigments and underwent processes used by artists. This was the case until the developments of the 19th century, which saw the use of synthetic compounds to apply colour to materials. While production became more efficient, many of these colour colours were not as safe as the ones that they replaced.
To combat this, Little Greene decided to incorporate many materials of the past for the preparation of their beautiful paints. The brand is proud of their paints’ depth of colour and shifts in tone that alter depending on different light settings. Their products can give your home real character, so that your house is sure to stand out from the crowd.
Complex formulations that grant over 40% more pigment than many ordinary paints give Little Greene colours unparalleled depth and a true point of difference when compared to other products. To complement their colour palette, their wallpapers resurrect designs found in traditional and lost designs - employing specialist printing methods on the finest grade papers. The result is an elegant collection of sophisticated textures and motifs, which are sure to impress for years to come.
English Heritage Colours used in the Little Green collection are a result of extensive research to discover the true historical colours used over several key periods in historic decoration from Georgian right up to the 1970s. This means that you can achieve a finish that is cohesive and true to your period project.
