Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is a satin-matt, clear finish for exterior. It is based on natural oils, is microporous, and does not crack, flake, peel or blister. When used as a final finish after staining wood, Osmo UV-Protection-Oil prolongs the renovation time significantly. As a stand alone finish, with two coats, it prolongs the greying process on vertical surfaces by UV-Protection factor 12 in comparison to untreated wood. Easy to renew, no sanding or primer necessary. Easy to apply, will not dry during application.
Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is based on natural vegetable oils. Natural oils penetrate deeply into the wood, keeping it elastic and healthy, and preventing it from drying and becoming brittle. The wood is allowed to breathe. Moisture can evaporate. Shrinking and swelling are reduced.
For all vertical exterior woods (dimensionally and non-dimensionally stable): doors, windows and window sills, carports, timber cladding, balcony, screens & fences, pergolas, garden houses and furniture.
Based on natural vegetable oils (sunflower- and soyabean oil), siccatives (drying agents) and additives. Disaromatized white spirit (benzene-free). This product fulfils EU-regulation (2004/42/EC) according to the VOC limit value of max. 400 g/l (Kat. A/e (2010)).
Wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (maximum moisture content 20%). Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is ready to use, please do no thin, stir well before use. Clean old open-porous finishes thoroughly. Remove old varnishes. Please do not sand even surfaces finer than P120. We recommend to apply a first coat with a pigmented oil such as One Coat Only, Natural Oil Wood Stain or Country Colour. If additional protection against blue stain, rot and mildew is required for outdoors pre-treat (if possible from all sides) with Osmo Base Coat WR
Apply thinly and evenly along the wood grain with either an Osmo Natural Bristle Brush or the Osmo Microfibre Roller, and spread well. Allow for good ventilation whilst drying. Apply a second coat as before. When applying on an already pigmented surface or when renovating 1 coat of the UV-Protection-Oil is enough. Make sure that the surface has been cleaned upfront. The finish is – among other things – influenced by the wood’s natural characteristics, therefore a trial application is required before finishing.
1 l = approx. 16 m² (1 coat smooth wood)
1 l = approx. 12 m² ( 2 coats smooth wood)
Stripped and rough sawn wood need more material because of their surface structure.
approx. 12 hours (normal climatic conditions, 23°C /50%, normal humidity). Lower temperatures and/or high humidity can increase the drying time.
Depending on the level of weathering apply 1 coat of Osmo UV-Protection-Oil after approx. 3-4 years on the cleaned and intact finish. In general, one has to take a shorter renovation time into account when surfaces are exposed to extreme weathering, and surfaces where water cannot drain (horizontal surfaces) such as deckings, post caps, window sills and garden chairs (furniture). If, however, the greying process has already begun revive the surface with the Osmo Wood
Reviver and re-apply 2 coats of the Osmo UV-Protection-Oil.
Depending on the level of weathering apply 1 coat of Osmo UV-Protection-Oil after approx. 3-4 years on the cleaned and intact finish. In general, one has to take a shorter renovation time into account when: 1. surfaces are exposed to extreme weathering, 2. using exotic wood species, 3. surfaces where water cannot drain (horizontal surfaces) such as deckings, post caps, garden chairs (furniture) and window sills. The UV-Protection-Oil is unsuitable as a stand alone finish for deckings. There should be a minimum 15 degree angle on architectural joinery on the horizontal. Sharp
edges have to be rounded (corner radius > 2 mm). If the greying process has already begun revive the surface with the Osmo Wood Reviver and reapply 2 coats of the Osmo UV-Protection-Oil. In order to achieve UV factor 12, it is very important to apply the UV-Protection-Oil twice. When only 1 coat has been applied on an untreated wood, the durability will be reduced significantly. Owing to the high oil content the clear UV-Protection-Oil shows a light yellowing effect when used as a final finish on white stained surfaces. Therefore, we recommend using the Natural Oil Woodstain 900 white as a final finish for already white stained surfaces. Oil enhances the natural tone of wood (wet look).
Damage caused during installation (fixing holes/cut edges) and other surface damages e.g. cracks should be treated immediately with two coats. These areas will grey quickly if left untreated.
